Background information for the Prefecture

The country of Heraklion was formed in 1889.  According to a decree, Crete was separated in five counties. However, immediately after the treaty of Bucharest in 1913 and the annexation of Crete in Greece, the county owned exactly the same geographical boundaries as nowadays. Additionally, the political subdivision of the county into provinces had been maintained until the appearance of the administrative reform in 1997 (known as "plan of Kapodistrias"). Finally, according to the 2001 census, the county of Heraklion owns twenty six municipalities and one hundred ninety-four municipal apartments.
